Official Indian Passport Dimensions: Millimeters, Centimeters, and Pixels

Passport-size photos in India are commonly 3.5 cm wide by 4.5 cm high (35 mm × 45 mm); the IBPS notification, for example, describes its photo as 4.5 cm × 3.5 cm passport style. For an actual passport application, follow the current instructions on passportindia.gov.in.

When translating physical print dimensions into digital pixels, the resolution depends on the Dots Per Inch (DPI) setting: - At about 254 DPI: 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm is 350 × 450 pixels (the tool preset) - At 300 DPI: 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm equals 413 × 531 pixels (used for studio printing)

Note that US passport specifications require 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm / 600 × 600 px at 300 DPI), which is square and completely different from the rectangular 35 × 45 mm Indian standard.

Framing Tips for a Passport-Size Photo

Exam notices describe very similar rules. From the IBPS and UPSC instructions: - Face: look straight at the camera; UPSC requires the face to cover at least 75% of the photo with both ears visible - Background: plain white (UPSC) or light, preferably white (IBPS), with no shadows - Eyes and glasses: eyes open and clearly visible, no dark glasses, no glare on spectacles - Headwear: caps and hats are not accepted; IBPS allows religious headwear that does not cover the face - Recency: use a recent colour photo

Frequently asked questions

What are the exact pixel dimensions for an Indian passport photo?

A 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo is 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI and 350 × 450 pixels at about 254 DPI, which is this tool’s preset. If your form states its own pixel size (IBPS prefers 200 × 230 px), use that number instead.

Is an Indian passport photo 2 × 2 inches?

No. 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) is the United States passport size. The usual Indian passport-size photo is 3.5 × 4.5 cm. A square photo forced into a 3.5 × 4.5 cm frame gets stretched, so crop it to the right shape first.

Why does this tool set the file size to 20–50 KB?

Because 20–50 KB is a common photo range on application forms (IBPS uses it, and it also fits UPSC’s 20–200 KB). You can change the KB limits before compressing if your form asks for something else.

Will my JPEG be uploaded to a server?

No. The image is compressed inside your browser using JavaScript and HTML5 Canvas, so it never leaves your device. That makes it safe for ID proofs, signatures, certificates and other personal documents.

What if my image is still above 50 KB?

Very large or highly detailed images may need smaller dimensions to fit under 50 KB. The tool automatically downscales dimensions while keeping JPEG quality crisp. You can also switch output format to WebP, which produces smaller files at high visual quality.
