About Text to Speech Reader

The Zynocode Labs Text to Speech tool is a browser-based online text reader and speech synthesizer built for writers, students, accessibility users, and professionals. Whether you need to proofread an essay by ear, rest your eyes while reviewing study notes, or check the rhythm of marketing copy, this tool turns written text into clear spoken audio instantly. Operating on the browser's native Web Speech API (SpeechSynthesis), this text to speech online tool requires no account or subscription, and your text is never sent to Zynocode servers. On-device voices keep it on your computer; voices marked "online" send it to your browser vendor to generate the audio. It utilizes speech engines installed on your operating system (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android) and browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari). Controls let you Play, Pause, Resume, and Stop, with sliders for speech rate (0.5x–2.0x), pitch (0–2), and volume (0%–100%). For an extensive overview of speech synthesis technology and audio proofreading practices, check out our Free Online Text Reader Guide. A key feature of this online text reader is synchronized word-by-word visual highlighting. As words are vocalized, the active term illuminates in real time. Type directly into the editor, load built-in sample texts, or open local .txt and .md files up to 1 MB. Worked Example: Testing the built-in Proofreading Sample highlights how auditory review exposes common writing flaws: "Our new feature lets you you export reports in seconds. Its easy to set up, and the the dashboard updates automatically every morning." - Total Words: 22 words - Estimated Duration: 9 seconds at 1.0x speed (or 6 seconds at 1.5x speed) - Speech Playback: Synchronized word-by-word highlighting tracks spoken delivery in real time - What to listen for: the repeated words ("you you", "the the") are much easier to hear than to spot. "Its" sounds the same as "it's", so check that one visually.

An online text reader converts written digital text into spoken voice audio using native browser speech synthesis. With adjustable playback speed, a choice of voices and word-by-word highlighting, it helps with proofreading, language practice and reading accessibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my text sent to a server when it is read aloud?

Not to Zynocode: the tool uses your browser's built-in Web Speech API. Whether it leaves your device depends on the voice. On-device voices generate the audio locally; voices marked "online" are generated by your browser vendor's servers. Choose an on-device voice for private drafts.

Why does the voice list look different across Google Chrome, Safari, and Microsoft Edge?

Voices depend on your operating system and browser. Windows, macOS, Android and iOS each ship their own voices, and some browsers add online voices: Chrome lists Google voices and Edge lists Microsoft online voices. The menu shows whatever your browser offers.

What does the 'online' tag next to certain voices mean?

The browser reports whether each voice runs on your device or online. We add the 'online' label to voices that are generated on the browser vendor's servers, so your text is sent there. Voices without the label run on your device.

How does the word-by-word visual reading highlight work?

During playback, the speech engine reports each word as it starts speaking it, and the reader highlights that word. Some voices (often the online ones) don't report word positions; the tool tells you when that happens.

Can I upload documents directly into the speech reader?

Yes. Click 'Open .txt / .md' to load a plain text or Markdown file up to 1 MB. The file is read in your browser, not uploaded. PDF and Word files aren't supported; copy their text in instead.

Can I download the generated speech as an MP3 or WAV audio file?

No. The Web Speech API is designed for live audio playback directly through device speakers and does not expose a raw audio stream for recording.

How is the estimated listening duration calculated?

It's an estimate: word count divided by 150 words per minute at 1.0x, scaled by the speed you choose. Real voices vary, so treat it as a guide.
